Dancing in the Snow

When I went skiing yesterday, the sky was a beautiful blue, the sun in all its glory, and a couple wisps of clouds wandering past just to remind us that they exist.

Today however it is snowing hard. There is no hint of sky but instead a beauty that belongs to today. If it were snowing much harder, visibility would be a problem. But with goggles, I can see the terrain quite adequately.

It is quite a beautiful sight to see the trees through falling snow, their limbs becoming adorned with white frosting. On the windward side, you can see their reddish-brown trunks almost glowing through the descending flakes, each one beautiful and unique. Sometimes as the snow falls and flurries a little in the breeze, the flakes seem to dance toward you, seemingly lit up with more than could get through the cloud cover. It is mesmerizing and beautiful. This is a certain kind of paradise.

“God? In heaven will you do away with such beauty as snow falling on the evergreens, snow dancing on the air and delighting the eyes?”

I think we appreciate this beauty as a beauty that was also in God’s heart when he created this earth. Even if this particular scene is no more when we get to heaven, the aesthetic creative eye which inspired it will be creating other beauties. There will be another beauty of the same sort of light dancing – perhaps the spray of his radiant glory as it bounces off of us – which will make this snow-scene drab by comparison. Either way, it will be much better than this scene, as much as it captivates me now.

BTW: The skiing was awesome, as the falling snow accumulated to five inches of fresh powder!
